Each appliance in the series supports both ASA and Firepower Threat Defense (FTD) software, and can be configured for traditional firewall roles or as a dedicated intrusion prevention system (IPS). Additionally, the series supports Q-in-Q (stacked VLAN) configurations with up to two 802.1Q headers per packet, making it suitable for complex network segmentation and monitoring setups.
