Choosing the right Power over Ethernet (PoE) switch comes down to matching your current network requirements while leaving enough headroom for future expansion.

Here is a step-by-step framework to help you select the correct PoE switch: 

Determine Your PoE Power Requirements

Not all PoE is the same. Different devices (IP cameras, Wi-Fi access points, VoIP phones) require different power standards.

  • Standard PoE (802.3af): Up to 15.4W per port (12.95W at device). Ideal for basic IP phones, static security cameras, and basic Wi-Fi APs.
  • PoE+ (802.3at): Up to 30W per port (25.5W at device). Ideal for PTZ (Pan-Tilt-Zoom) cameras, Wi-Fi 5/6 access points, and video IP phones.
  • PoE++ / 4PPoE (802.3bt Type 3): Up to 60W per port. Ideal for Wi-Fi 6E/7 APs, high-power PTZ cameras with heaters, and digital signage.
  • PoE++ / 4PPoE (802.3bt Type 4): Up to 90W–100W per port. Ideal for laptops, LED lighting systems, and high-draw smart building devices.
Key Rule: Always check the Total PoE Power Budget of the switch. A 24-port PoE+ switch with a 180W total power budget cannot power 24 PoE+ devices at maximum draw (24 × 30W = 720W). Calculate the maximum total watts your devices will pull combined and choose a switch with at least 20% headroom.

Choose Port Count and Port Speeds
  •  Port Count: Choose a switch with enough ports for your powered devices, non-PoE wired devices, plus 20–30% expansion buffer (e.g., 8, 16, 24, or 48 ports).
  • Access Port Speeds:
    • Gigabit (1 Gbps): The standard for almost all IP cameras, VoIP systems, and standard desktop usage.
    • Multi-Gigabit (2.5G / 5G): Crucial if you are deploying Wi-Fi 6, 6E, or Wi-Fi 7 access points to avoid bandwidth bottlenecks.
  • Uplink Ports: Look for dedicated SFP (1 Gbps) or SFP+ (10 Gbps) fiber uplink ports so you don't waste standard PoE Ethernet ports when connecting to your router, core switch, or NAS.

  • Industrial / Ruggedized: DIN-rail mounted with extended temperature resistance for outdoor enclosures, warehouses, or harsh industrial floors.
